A 12 tonne capacity truck-mounted crane is being launched by Böcker

German crane and lifting equipment manufacturer Böcker is launching a new truck-mounted crane: the AK 52.

Böcker said the AK 52 has a maximum payload of 12 tonnes and an extension length of 52 metres (optional 55 m). The crane is made from aluminium-steel and has a hybrid telescopic mast system with a 45-metre reach and an endless pivoting range.

The telescopic boom is radio controlled and Böcker said, due to the AK 52’s powerful cylinder technology, it can extend completely without changing its mast angle – even when in an almost vertical position.

The AK 52 is steered by the rear-axle and has a compact design with a small swing-through radius which Böcker said makes it flexible in tight spaces. When maximum reach is attained, Böcker explained, the swing-through radius is 2.2 metres, and the turret protrudes no more than 0.9 metres beyond the frame of the carrier vehicle. This is possible because the crane does not need to be equipped with retractable counterweights.

Variable support positions and a large support lift with a high ground clearance also facilitate set up on site, said Böcker, while sensors on each support are designed to provide the optimal ground load distribution and ensure that the axles retract automatically during levelling.

Böcker said the AK 52 can be retrofitted with a specially-made work basket for use as a work platform quickly and without requiring specialist tools due to its Easy-Lock system. The work basket is designed for a 600 kg payload and can be hydraulically extended to a range of 3.5 metres during operation. It can also be hydraulically rotated through 400 degrees.

The crane is powered via an auxiliary drive on the truck which, Böcker claimed, consumes less fuel and requires less maintenance than separate ancillary drives. It also facilitates handling, since refuelling only has to take place once, Böcker added, while a large tank volume on the truck is designed to enable the crane to be operated for longer periods.

The overall power supply for the AK 52 is installed inside the main mast and in the boom. Böcker said it designed it this way in order to protect it against external influences and damage. A closed mast profile prevents foreign objects penetrating inside, Böcker claimed. Similarly, the power supply for the support cylinder is protected inside the support housing.

The crane will be equipped with an intelligent control system and a radio remote control system with a graphic display which, Böcker said, makes the crane easy-to-use and safe. The control technology has an automatic set-up control, an auto-levelling function, and a ‘go-home’ function for easy and quick dismantling. Optional camera technology, with a camera mounted permanently on the mast, enables the operator to control blind spots on the radio control display during crane operation.

In addition, the crane has lockable stainless steel storage compartments.
